- On Feb 8, 2011, the department of Chemistry at AUB launched the campaign to raise $150,000 to establish
an endowment in the name of Prof. Haddadin named Makhlouf Haddadin Endowment. Part of the proceeds from the Haddadin Endowment will be used to fund two
$500 annual cash prizes: the Makhlouf Haddadin Award for Outstanding Chemistry Undergraduate Student and the Makhlouf Haddadin Award for Outstanding Chemistry Graduate Student.
Lectureship in the name of Prof. Haddadin will also be established using proceeds from the Haddadin Endowment. We welcome your contribution to Makhlouf
Haddadin Endowment. Attached is the "pledge form".
In addition to his international reputation as an organic chemist, Professor Haddadin has been especially celebrated for his
achievements in the area of heterocyclic chemistry that resulted in the publication of 99 scholarly papers in prestigious
international journals. A landmark event in Professor Haddadin’s career was his co-discovery of the Beirut Reaction – a
reaction that impacted the field of pharmaceutical chemistry and yielded 40 patents in numerous countries. As a professor of
chemistry since 1965, he has excelled in teaching and research and has been called on to serve in many other capacities as well.
He has held many key senior administration positions at AUB including vice president for academic affairs, acting dean of the Faculty
of Health Sciences, chairman of the Board of Graduate Studies, and university parliamentarian. One of Professor Haddadin’s most
recent accomplishments was his election in August 2009 as the first Lebanon-based member of the prestigious Lebanese Academy of
Sciences.
