Chemistry—our life, our future

- UNESCO announced 2011 to be the International Year of Chemistry, IYC2011, in partnership with the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). Dr. Bilal R. Kaafarani was selected by IUPAC to be the 2011 International Year of Chemistry representative in Lebanon. Dr. Kaafarani (bilal.kaafarani@aub.edu.lb; www.bilalkaafarani.com) will coordinate the activities at AUB and in Lebanon in celebration of the achievements of chemistry and its contributions to the well-being of the entire humankind.

- The First AUB Undergraduate Organic Competition will be organized on Monday, February 7, 2011 (preliminary date) as an activity celebrating IYC2011. The competition will be open to ALL students who completed Chem 211 and Chem 212. Teams of two students will be competing using Clickers with the "Fastest Responders" tool. Students are allowed to choose their partners. Further details will be announced in October 2010.

- Thesis Defense
Rasha Al-Moustafa defended her thesis entitled:
"Synthesis of Pyrene-Based Discotics for Potential Electronic Applications"on Tuesday, Jan 22, 2008 and passed with flying colors...

- Fadi Jradi from Kaafarani's group was granted a stay for 8 weeks during Summer 2007 (July 15-Sep 15, 2007) at the Center for Photochemical Sciences at Bowling Green State University. Fadi was working with Thilini Kuruwita-Mudiyanselage on the synthesis of red emitters at the laboratories of Prof. Douglas C. Neckers.



- Our paper “Isomeric Purity and the Influence of Structure on Field-Effect Mobility” J. Mater. Chem. 2006, 16, 1121 was selected for the cover of the March 28, 2006 issue of the Journal of Materials Chemistry.
